Cilian Murphywho recently won the Oscar for best actor for his role in Oppenheimer, has signed on to star in a new film project created by Universal Pictures. The film is a mining drama titled Blood makes coal flowand will also produce the film.
The film project is based on the author’s 2020 book Mark A. Bradley, Blood Runs from Coal: The Yablonski Murders and the Battle for the United Miners of America. The story follows “the 1969 murder of mining union organizer Joseph ‘Jock’ Yablonski, who was killed at home with his wife and daughter. The killings followed Yablonski’s campaign against a corrupt union leader and kicked off a long investigation that exposed shady dealings within the coal industry.”
It sounds like a fascinating story and it will be a fantastic film for Murphy to be a part of. This is a role that he will really be able to immerse himself in. The full description of the book reads:
In the early hours of New Year’s Eve 1969, in the small mining district of Clarksville, Pennsylvania, longtime union member Joseph “Jock” Yablonski, his wife and daughter were brutally murdered in their old stone farmhouse. Seven months earlier, Yablonski had announced his campaign to oust the corrupt United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) president, Tony Boyle, who had long siphoned UMWA funds, silenced intra-union dissent, and served the interests of large coal companies. Yablonski wanted to return the union to the coal miners it was supposed to represent and restore the organization to what it had once been, a powerful force for social good. Boyle was enraged by his opponent’s attempt to seize power and would do anything to retain power.
The Yablonski murders, one of the most infamous crimes in American labor history, triggered one of the most intense and successful manhunts in FBI history and also led to the base’s first successful takeover of a major union in modern U.S. history. , which inspired workers in other unions to rise up and challenge their entrenched, out-of-touch leaders.
An extraordinary portrait of one of the nation’s major unions on the brink of historic change, Blood Runs Coal arrives at a time of resurgent labor movements in the United States and the current administration’s attempts to prop up the fossil fuel industry. Brilliantly researched and compellingly written, it sheds light on the far-reaching effects of industrial and socioeconomic change occurring across America to the present day.
The film will be produced by John Davis, Jordan Davis and Alan Moloney. The screenplay was written by Jez Butterworth E John Henry Butterworththat he worked on previously Edge of tomorrowwhile Jez Butterworth is also known for the James Bond films Spectrum AND Ford V Ferrariand John-Henry Butterworth credits include Go out AND Indiana Jones and the Quadrant of Destiny.
