Ghostbusters: The Frozen Empire it was a fun movie, but it was also a bit of a mess. Regardless of the Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 45%, I think the film will still be a hit with audiences and be moderately successful at the box office.
The film truly felt like a live-action cartoon, and that’s not surprising considering it was heavily inspired by the classic 1986 cartoon series. The real Ghostbusters. Co-writer and director Gil Kenan confirmed that he and the producer Jason Reitmann I watched the series before working on the film and there are ways in which it inspired the tone of the film. Kenan said:
“We both love Viggo [from Ghostbusters II], but we thought that since Gozer returned in Afterlife, the burden was on us to boldly lead into the unknown by creating our own villain and go off the map to discover their mythology and their history. We watched a lot of episodes of Real Ghostbusters as a cleansing and heart-opening process before we started writing, because that show is, first of all, so good and super funny and it’s also wild with its boundary-pushing, in terms of draw on mythologies and stories you may have heard of and give the city’s corners supernatural attention in a way that movies simply don’t have the screen time to do. So watching those shows was actually really inspiring, not in a literal sense, but in a broader, thematic, spiritual way.”
These comments echo past remarks Kenan has shared that the film’s villains took inspiration from the cartoon series with its “wild, original and weird as hell villains.” He added: “We wanted to bring the ease and courage of that show into this film. I think it will surprise people how great this film is.”
The real Ghostbusters it’s an amazing show and I loved that they were heavily inspired by it when making the film. But the film could have been much better with a little more work on the script and story development.
In the story, New York City finds itself frozen by an ancient artifact that unleashes an evil force! Furthermore, the original. In the film, “the Spengler family returns to where it all began – the iconic New York firehouse – to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who have developed a top-secret research lab to take ghost busting to the next level . But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, the old and new Ghostbusters must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.
The film is now in theaters.
