The cult film of 1999 The Boondock Saints is getting another sequel thanks to Thunder Road, the production company behind the John Wick movie. They’ve teamed up with franchise rights holder Dragonfly Films and say it’s “a universe expansion of the action film franchise about Irish twin brothers who raise hell to liberate their hometown of Boston from everyone criminals.”
Norman Reedus AND Sean Patrick Flanery they will return as the MacManus brothers, with Billy Connolly returning to play their father. Creator and director of franchising Troy Duffy he will not direct the film. He directed the original film along with the 2009 sequel The Boondock Saints: All Saints Day.
While the hunt for a new director is underway, Duffy plans to write a series of books about the Saints, continuing their story in this way.
Producer Basil Iwanyk, of Thunder Road Films said in a statement: ‘When we were given the opportunity to help bring the MacManus brothers back to the screen, we jumped at the chance. The unique chance to build on the mythology and iconic characters for all the longtime fans of the series, as well as open it up to a whole new generation, is something we couldn’t be more excited about.”
Producer Todd Myers, of Dragonfly Films said: “From the moment I saw the first film, it has been my dream to add something to the extraordinary story of the Boondock Saints. I’ve been talking to Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus about making this dream a reality for over ten years.”
Reedus added: “I am thrilled to be working alongside Basil Iwanyk’s Thunder Road Films and Todd Myers’ Dragonfly Films to bring the story of the Boondock Saints to audiences. I can’t wait for everyone to see what we’ve been working on for a while. We are moving forward without our longtime friend and Captain, Troy Duffy, on this one. He’s decided to write a Boondock Saints book series and I can’t wait to read it.”
Flanery shared, “Basil and Todd are the perfect partners to get the brothers out of prison. With Basil and Todd at the helm, these will be the best Saints ever. So now it’s time for the brothers to break out their peacoats, recharge their batteries and get back to work.
As a long-time fan of this franchise, I’m excited to see that we’re getting another movie! It will be interesting to see who the producers hire to direct the film. I just hope that whatever they do will be amazing!
