Bill Murray is returning to the role of Peter Venkman in Ghostbusters: The Frozen Empireand had a great time reuniting with the original cast, as well as the newcomers from the last film, Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021). While Murray appreciates having made a series of films that have remained popular and beloved by his fans, there are some difficult aspects of making a film. ghost Buster film 40 years after the first.
In a recent interview with the cast on CBS This Morning (via cinemablend), Murray talked about the ups and downs of filming this film, saying:
“I think it’s fun to have made something that’s lasted this long. That’s really the best part, seeing it as a film, as a worker. But the funniest thing is seeing these people. That’s when we come together and remember the pain of before, the fun of before, the pain and fun of the future.
When asked to clarify what he meant by “pain,” Bill Murray didn’t hesitate before pointing to proton packs as the source of his problems. He continued:
“Wear those damn backpacks. The backpacks were uncomfortable. They’re really heavy and, you know, wearing a backpack a long time ago was a shame. Wearing the backpack now is like torture. It’s really torture. But we’d laugh about how we’d finish a take and then have to go up a flight of stairs or something, and we’d just stare at each other like… [shakes head incredulously] — ‘This is the end, this is the last, this is it, right?’ And not the final film, the final shot.
While Bill Murray was talking about the wardrobe issue, Dan Aykroydwho plays Ray Stantz in the films, sat next to his co-star with his lips pressed together in a tight smile, nodding slightly in approval.
Actress McKenna Gracewho plays Phoebe Spengler in the film, also spoke about the difficulty of wearing the proton pack in a recent interview, saying:
“As heavy as those damn proton packs are, I’d gladly put one on again. Proton packs weigh about 40 pounds, but I’m okay with that because it’s been a dream come true to be a part of this franchise. I love these movies. I love becoming a Ghostbusters. I mean, who are you going to call? This guy! Me.”
And even Annie Potts, who plays Janine Melnitz in the films, will get dressed up this time! We’ll see all the Ghostbusters in all their proton pack-wearing glory starting this weekend! Already have your tickets?
