Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse producer Chris Miller he recently took to social media to make clear he didn’t appreciate it Jimmy Kimmelduring the Oscars ceremony, and called his comments “tired and lazy.”
Kimmel drew a lot of mixed reactions after hosting the 96th Academy Awards last weekend, and for me, he was once again disappointed. At one point during the ceremony, Kimmell made a bad joke about the Best Animated Feature category, and Miller didn’t find his dismissal of the genre very funny.
Kimmel said, “Please raise your hand if you let your child fill out this part of the ballot.” The insinuation was that these films don’t count because they are made for children, which many film fans would dispute.
Miller responded to that joke, saying, “Animation is not a genre for children, it’s a medium for people and that medium is film. Just a reminder about nothing. For those who were confused, ‘nothing.’ it was yet another ‘this category’. It’s for the joke of the kids at the Oscars, who are just tired and lazy at this point.”
As someone who loves the art of animation, I agree 100% with Miller. Hayao Miyazaki’S The boy and the heron deservedly won the big prize that night, and I’m glad Miller said something.
As for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Versealthough it didn’t win an Oscar, it did win seven Annie Awards and a Critics’ Choice Award.
