Four years ago, it was announced that Disney was looking to move forward with a live-action remake of the animated classic Bambi. Then last year, the studio disclosed that they were looking to hire an Oscar-winning director Sarah Polley (Women talking) to direct the feature film. News of the remake has been scarce since then, but now, according to a report from The Wrap, Polley has quietly dropped the remake.
It is unclear when Polley left and under what circumstances. The report also states that the studio is equally unclear whether the film will move forward. Former president of Walt Disney Motion Picture Production, Sean Bailey, recently left his position and has been largely responsible for the number of live-action remakes we’ve seen over the past decade. Now that he’s left the studio, things may or may not change, which Disney CEO Bob Iger recently spoke about at Morgan Stanley’s investor conference, where he said the studio has “already killed some projects that we had just done “. I don’t feel like we’re strong enough.” he didn’t mention anything by name, although it’s possible that “Bambi” was one of those projects.
Only time will tell. I don’t think anyone was really clamoring for a remake of Bambi, so I think one could easily fall by the wayside, and the studio wouldn’t suffer. As it stands, many of Disney’s live-action remakes haven’t been very successful in terms of money and fan reception, so I think Disney would be wise to continue making sequels and original content.
What do you think? You hope the studio moves forward with a live-action Bambi movie?
