With all the excitement around the release of X-Men ’97which is a sequel series to the 90s original X-Men: The Animated Seriesthe showrunner of Spider-Man: The Animated Series in the 90’s, John Semper Jr.wants to Spider-Man ’94 rebirth!
As X-Men: The Animated Series, Spider-Man: The Animated Series was a huge hit among kids in the ’90s, and there’s no doubt that if that show had a revival like X-Men ’97, fans would have gone crazy with excitement! I have no idea if that will ever happen, but Semper Jr. is ready and willing to jump in if it does.
For those of you who don’t remember, the show ended on a huge cliffhanger! Mary Jane Watson was still missing and Spider-Verse was even in play. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t mind seeing the story continue!
A fan recently reached out to Semper Jr. on X to ask if he would be interested in resurrecting the show, and he said, “All they have to do is call me. I’m here and I would definitely consider doing it.”
This was followed by responses from fans, one of whom said: “[Disney Plus] [Kevin Feige] Honk ASAP,” and another said, “They should have picked Spidey first instead of X-Men ’97, hopefully we get the continuation of the best Spider-Man animated series.” Another wrote, “I beg every night and every day.”
The first trailer of X-Men ’97 contained a copy of the Daily Bugle reiterating that the show takes place in the same world as Spider-Man: The Animated Series.
Speaking previously about how much the ’90s Spider-Man series is beloved by fans, Semper Jr. said, “Well, it’s spectacular. I’m, right now, very happy to be me.” [Laughs]. I get wonderful feedback from fans. Almost every other day I get an email or letter out of the blue from someone explaining what the series meant to them.”
He added: “I always hoped that the show would have longevity and impact across the board, and that people would appreciate the kind of drama we brought. It was about threading that needle to appeal to fans, older people, and introduce Spider-Man to a new generation of kids who were completely unfamiliar with him.”
As for a possible revival, he added, “I don’t think the politics of the situation will allow them to revive the ’90s Spider-Man series. If they did, I don’t know if I’d get involved. I was in a great position because I was really able to have a lot of creative control over that show after episode 13 or 14. I don’t know if I’ll ever be in that situation again, so it would really make it a different kind of thing.”
You’d like to see Marvel reborn Spider-Man: The Animated Series and continue the story?
All they have to do is call me. I’m here and I would definitely consider doing it.
