Dennis Quaid will star in Paramount+’s upcoming dramatic thriller series Happy face, and will take on the role of the real-life serial killer famously called “Happy Face” because of the smiley faces he drew on evidence where he bragged about his crimes. He will act alongside her Annaleigh Ashford who will play his daughter, Melissa, in the series.
The series is inspired by the true story of Melissa Moore; THE Happy face iHeartPodcasts and Moore podcasts; and autobiography Shattered Silencewritten by Moore with M. Bridget Cook.
In the series, “taking inspiration from Moore’s true story. Happy Face (Quaid) is an incarcerated serial killer who is also Melissa’s (Ashford) once-beloved father. After decades of no contact, he finally finds a way back into his daughter’s life. In a race against time, Melissa must find out if an innocent man will be put to death for a crime committed by her father. Meanwhile, she discovers the impact her father had on the families of his victims and faces a reckoning with her own identity.
It looks like it’s going to be a pretty intense series. I’m fascinated by these kinds of stories, though, and this one sounds very interesting. I will definitely be listening to the podcast before the series releases.
The eight-episode first season of Happy face was developed by the showrunner Jennifer Cacio and is produced by CBS Studios in association with King Size Productions, iHeartPodcasts and Semi-Formal Productions. The series will begin filming this spring in Vancouver and will premiere on Paramount+ in 2025.
