A recent report from THR offered an update on the matter Lightning saying Marvel Studios has hired Giovanna Calòthe showrunner of the hit FX series The bear, to work on the film’s screenplay. In that section of the report, they also share something about the ending of the film.
These details were pulled from early drafts of the script, and there’s a chance the film could still end up this way. It is unknown how much has changed in the script since Calo took over as writer. So I will warn you, possible major spoilers ahead.

The report reveals that the story “centers on villains and anti-heroes who embark on a mission that should have ended in their deaths.”
So, the movie would have seen all these characters die at the end of the movie! That would have been a damn bold move, and one that I would be shocked if Marvel actually pulled off! I honestly wouldn’t mind if they did. It would be so different and bold from anything we’ve seen Marvel do before. But yeah… they probably changed it. But there’s a good chance that some of these characters will probably be killed off.
I wonder if the creative team looked James Gunn’S The suicide squad, and we were like, “Yeah, let’s do it.” We’ll just have to wait and see what they end up delivering with this story.
The cast of Lightning includes Sebastiano Stan as Bucky Barnes who will lead the team, Davide Porto in the role of the Red Guardian, Julie Louis-Dreyfus as Countess Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Wyatt Russell as a US agent, Hannah John-Kamen in the role of Ghost, Olga Kurylenko in the role of Taskmaster, Lewis Pullmann he was offered the role of the Sentinel and, of course, Florence Pugh in the role of Elena Belova. Then, there is Harrison Fordwho takes on the role of General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, who will become President of the United States in Captain America: New World Order.
The film is directed by Jake Schreier (Paper cities, joke), from a screenplay by Eric Pearson (Thor: Ragnarok, Black Widow) AND Kurt Busiek. Lightning it is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on July 25, 2025.
