Peacock has ordered a limited scripted series about infamous serial killer John Wayne Gacy, inspired by the 2021 Peacock/NBC News Studios docuseries John Wayne Gacy: The Devil in Disguisewith the scripted series sharing the same name, but swapped.
Patrick Macmanus will serve as the show’s writer, showrunner and executive producer. Macmanus had already created the first season of the True Crime series Peacock Doctor Death and the Hulu True Crime limited series The girl from Plainvillewith Macmanus also serving as showrunner on both shows.
The official description of Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy states: “From 1972 to 1978, thirty-three young men were kidnapped, murdered, and buried in a crawl space beneath their killer’s home. And no one was the wiser. Not for all those years. Why? He was charming and funny. He had a good, all-American job. He was a community leader. He even volunteered to entertain sick children… dressed as a clown. “Devil In Disguise: John Wayne Gacy” unravels the twisted layers of John Wayne Gacy’s life as he weaves together the harrowing stories of his mostly gay victims; explore the pain, guilt and trauma of their families and friends; and expose the systemic failures, missed opportunities and social prejudices that fueled his reign of terror.”
This will be the last true crime series coming to Peacock. Furthermore Doctor Deathwhich recently debuted its second season, the streamer has also aired the series previously A family friend, which dealt with the kidnapping of Jan Broberg. Peacock also had the limited series Joe vs Carolewhich detailed the rivalry – and eventual murder-for-hire case – involving Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin.
