Thanks to Godzilla Minus One, there’s been a lot of hype for Legendary Entertainment Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which will be a completely different film. While I would love to see Godzilla in action again, Godzilla x Kong that’s not necessarily what I’m looking for in a Godzilla movie.
Godzilla minus one director Takashi Yamazaki recently revealed on X that he saw Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and shared his thoughts about it, and it turns out he liked it! She commented briefly:
“I got to watch the big movie soon! It’s super fun and wonderful. Be sure to watch it on the big screen.”
In a previous interview with Empirethe director was asked to share his thoughts on how Legendary’s MonsterVerse uses Godzilla, and he responded:
“The Hollywood interpretation of Godzilla is a very interesting use of the IP. [The monster] it can withstand and survive many different interpretations. For me it’s more fun [version] of what Godzilla can be: Toho’s classic version explored something like this at some point in its history. Within that genre, I think they do a good job [balancing] what humans do versus what kaiju do.”
It’s still hard for me to swallow the hype because the last two films of Legendary’s MonsterVerse films have been awful. This movie doesn’t look like it’s going to be any better. But, with my expectations so low, maybe it will surprise me!
In the upcoming film, “The Epic Battle Continues! Legendary Pictures’ Monsterverse film follows the explosive clash of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new adventure that pits the all-powerful Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal unknown threat hidden in our world, which puts their very existence… and ours to the test. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire delves further into the stories of these Titans and their origins, as well as the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, uncovering the mythical battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and forever bind them to humanity.
The director had previously spoken about the relationship between Godzilla and Kong, saying: “There’s a little truce: Godzilla is in control of the surface world and Kong is in the Hollow Earth. It wasn’t, ‘Okay, call me when something goes wrong, Kong. And I, Godzilla, will come to the rescue!’ The dynamic of the dysfunctional friend-cop relationship is probably the best to describe Godzilla and Kong. My influences are always tied to the ’80s, and the ’80s were the best for that [that] plot. There are many misunderstandings: the way monsters communicate is not simple.”
The film is the protagonist Rebecca Sala (Godzilla vs. Kong), Brian Tyree Henry (Godzilla vs. Kong), Dan Stevens (Legion), Kaylee Hottle (Godzilla vs. Kong), Alex Felci (The Batman) AND Fala Chen (Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings).
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will be released in theaters on April 12, 2024.
