Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard has offered more details about its new film which sees Godzilla and Kong team up to fight an even bigger and badder villain, King Skar. One of the biggest things Wingard revealed is that the film will feature “multiple” versions of Godzilla. Speaking to Empire, the director opened up about the story, saying:
“There’s a truce of sorts: Godzilla is in control of the surface world and Kong is in the Hollow Earth. It wasn’t, ‘Okay, call me when something goes wrong, Kong. And I, Godzilla, will come to the rescue!’ The dynamic of the dysfunctional friend-cop relationship is probably the best to describe Godzilla and Kong. My influences are always tied to the ’80s, and the ’80s were the best for that [that] plot. There are many misunderstandings: the way monsters communicate is not simple.”
So, will it be like a buddy cop Kaiju movie?! I see people supporting him. Wingard went on to say, “There’s a personal journey that Kong is going through,” and when he brought up Godzilla’s pink glow, he shared that “this is his version of a training routine.” He went on to explain that we will see “multiple” versions of Godzilla:
“I’m really passionate about Shaw Brothers martial arts. Those movies are always about, “Here’s a big threat and you have to do all these things to pump yourself up so you can deal with that threat.” Get ready for monstrous value for money. You’ll see many different versions of Godzilla in this film.”
I can’t say I liked everything I saw that was released for the film. But there are people who are enthusiastic about it. I hope the film lives up to their expectations. Mine are very low and nothing Wingard has said about the film makes it easier for me to get excited about it.

Legendary Pictures’ Monsterverse film follows the explosive clash of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new adventure that pits the all-powerful Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal unknown threat hidden in our world, which puts their very existence… and ours to the test. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire delves further into the stories of these Titans and their origins, as well as the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, uncovering the mythical battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and forever bind them to humanity.
The film is the protagonist Rebecca Sala (Godzilla vs. Kong), Brian Tyree Henry (Godzilla vs. Kong), Dan Stevens (Legion), Kaylee Hottle (Godzilla vs. Kong), Alex Felci (The Batman) e Fala Chen (Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings).
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will be released in theaters on April 12, 2024.
