Long time film editor and Martin Scorsese collaborator Thelma Schoonmaker recently talked about working with the legendary director and the kind of director he is. She worked with him The assassins of the Flower Moon and many other Scorsese films over the years.
When it comes to wild bullwhich received eight Oscar nominations and won two, Schoonmaker believes it wasn’t truly appreciated for another 10 years, when it became a contender in polls for best film of all time.
This led her to talk about a pattern she has seen repeat itself again and again, as studios continually attempt to change Scorsese’s vision for the films he makes. It’s a constant struggle for Scorsese and he would rather burn his film than let the studio take control of it. He explained to Total Film:
“It happened all the time with Marty’s films. It’s only in the last 10 years or so that he’s been recognized as the great director that he is. Believe me, we’ve had to fight tooth and nail [on] each of those films to keep changing it by the studio. And Marty would burn the film rather than give it up. We would win, but it would be a long and hard battle.”
It’s kind of strange that Scorsese still has to deal with studios fighting against him and his vision, which still seems to win in the end. So, why do studios continue to fight with him? I guess that’s just what Hollywood studio executives like to do. Maybe they need to feel like they’re getting their money’s worth somehow.
In any case, it’s nice to know that Scorsese never had to burn any of his films!
