Hideo Kojima talks about the difficulty of adapting DEATH STRANDING into a film

Hideo KojimaIt’s an amazing and crazy video game Stranded Death is getting a movie treatment, but the creator admits it will be “pretty difficult” to adapt. During a recent interview on HideoTube, Kojima stated:

“It’s easier to adapt it into a TV series, like The Last of Us. It’s quite difficult to adapt a 50-60 hour game like Death Stranding into a 2-3 hour movie.”

Kojima also explained that cuts would be necessary, adding: “The story of the game as it stands cannot be contained in just two hours.” However, he hopes that the film will be successful thanks to other video game projects developed over the years that have been as successful as The Super Mario Bros. movie. He said:

“In the past, film adaptations of video games always failed… But in the last 4-5 years, people who understand games have taken on the task of adapting them into a film or drama. There have been several successes, such as [The Super Mario Bros. Movie]. This is the trend these days.”

THE Stranded Death the film is produced in collaboration with A24 and speaking about their involvement and what they will bring to the film, Kojima said:

“With A24, I want to make something that is based on a game but is also independent and artistic, something that can win awards at film festivals like Cannes, Venice or Sundance.”

As for whether the game will include the game advantage Norman Reedus as courier Sam Bridges-Porter, Kojima said: “Nothing has been decided yet. We are still looking for a director.”

Speaking previously about the film, Kojima had explained that it would not be a direct translation of the game: “There are a lot of ‘game adaptation films’ out there, but what we’re creating is not just a direct translation of the game. intention is that our audience is not just fans of games, but that our film is aimed at anyone who loves cinema.”

He added that they are expanding the Stranded Death world: “We are creating a Stranded Death a universe never seen before will be born, reachable only through the cinematographic medium.” Kojima also added that he believes A24’s “innovative approach” to storytelling matches what Kojima Productions has been doing for the past eight years.

The original game “challenges players to reconnect a fractured society after the catastrophic ‘Death Stranding’ event. This opened a door between the living and the dead, leading creatures from the afterlife to wander the fallen world marred by a desolate society. Carrying what remains of humanity’s future in his hands, players will play as Sam Bridges as he embarks on a mission to give humanity hope by connecting the last survivors of a decimated America.”

I’m excited and curious to see what it’s all about Stranded Death the film ends up being the kind of wild story it will tell.
