Stephen King’s HOLLY is getting a series adaptation from veteran series producer King

Another Stephen King the novel is getting a series adaptation! Holly was developed by the manufacturer Jack Bender, who has a good track record of adapting King projects for TV. Previously you have worked on shows such as Under the dome, Mister Mercedesand HBO The intruderand is also developing a film adaptation of King’s Elevation along with a limited series version of The Institute.

Bender shared this news last year during a Q&A as part of Chicago’s Printers Row Lit Fest 2023 (via CinemaBlend). He was there to talk about his book I’m sorry: art and excusesand at one point Bender shared information about his time working with King, saying:

“It’s the joy of telling stories and making them happen with a group of people. That’s one of the best things about making television, when you work with great people on material you care about. I was lucky enough to know and work with Stephen King – speaking of writers. His new book Holly, by the way, is fantastic. We’ll make a show of it. We didn’t announce it.”

When the interviewer asked if it was a “scoop,” Jack Bender replied, “A little.” In case you don’t know or don’t remember, Holly follows the character Holly Gibney, who was introduced in Mr. Mercedes, and also appeared in a couple of other King stories. It’s great that this was developed as a series!

The book description reads:

Stephen King’s Holly marks the triumphant return of King’s beloved character, Holly Gibney. Readers have witnessed Holly’s gradual transformation from a shy (but also courageous and ethical) recluse in Mr. Mercedes to Bill Hodges’ partner in Finders Keepers to a fully fledged, intelligent and occasionally tough private detective in The Outsider. In King’s new novel, Holly is alone and pitted against a pair of unimaginably depraved and brilliantly disguised adversaries.

When Penny Dahl calls the Finders Keepers detective agency hoping for help locating her missing daughter, Holly is reluctant to take on the case. Her partner, Pete, has Covid. Her mother (very complicated) has just died. And Holly is supposed to be on vacation. But something in Penny Dahl’s desperate voice makes it impossible for Holly to refuse.

Professors Rodney and Emily Harris live a few blocks from where Bonnie Dahl disappeared. They are the picture of bourgeois respectability: married octogenarians, devoted to each other, and semi-retired lifelong academics. But they’re hiding a devilish secret in the basement of their well-kept, book-filled home that may be linked to Bonnie’s disappearance. And it will prove almost impossible to find out what they are doing: they are expert, patient and ruthless.

Holly must summon all her formidable talents to outwit and outwit the incredibly twisted professors in this chilling new masterpiece from Stephen King.

The character was best played in Mister Mercedes series of Justine Lupe, and I hope Bender brings her back to play the character in this Holly series. The project is still in early development, though, and it will be a while before we see anything from it.

Bender is currently focusing on the horror series From and the adaptation of The Institute is next on his list of projects to develop. Bender said:

“When I finish From, I will also write his book The Institute. But Stephen is an amazing guy. He is a boy in a t-shirt and a hat. He is the least pretentious genius he has ever met.

What are your thoughts? Holly be adapted into a series?
