Bradley Cooper shares with Vince Vaughn the WEDDING CRASHERS experience that changed his approach to acting

Remember that time Bradley Cooper starred in the play Wedding crash? This was long before she became the big star and A-list director that she is now. I loved that movie, and while Copper’s role didn’t leave much of an impression on audiences, the movie had a huge impact on him and his approach to acting.

During a recent interview with Variety, Cooper shared an experience he had while watching the set Vince Vaughn doing his own thing and that inspired him. It was just a matter of being willing to fail. He changed his whole perspective on acting. He explained…

“Up until that point, I had always tried to get it right on camera. Be present and do it well. I’m watching Vince Vaughn destroy a scene, just destroy it, and then he wants another take. It was the scene where the grandmother shoots him, she pulls out the gun and he runs out. He just says, “I want to do another one.” In front of everyone… this huge crew and the lights and it’s so unnerving… and it was the will of him to fail.”

What impressed Cooper was the way Vaughn could make a scene work and then be willing to move forward anyway, trying all kinds of other things. Even though not everything worked out, Vaughn kept moving forward! Cooper continued:

“Watching Vince Vaughn… this huge, tough guy, the funniest guy, the fastest guy… I was just in awe of this human being, this man who fails, willing to try anything. At one point, he was just running away and got caught in this thing and was making this song. I loved seeing it, but it clearly wasn’t working. But it didn’t even matter. It was all of us watching this artist explore with complete abandon. It was like a diamond went through my head saying, “That’s it!” That freedom to be absolutely willing to fail.’ It changed me forever. That was the moment.”

I love. I’ve always believed that it’s okay to fail because you learn and grow from those experiences. Maybe, though, I’m just telling myself this to make myself feel better, because I’ve failed so badly at so many things in life!
