The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado is where Stephen King wrote his legendary horror novel The brilliant and the hotel serves as the main inspiration for the story. It’s actually a really interesting hotel to visit! I went there once in the 90s and it was a really nice and memorable experience.
The Stanley Hotel is already a must-visit destination for ghost hunters and those curious about the supernatural. Blumhouse is now partnering with the hotel and they are looking to create a “true horror destination” within the iconic setting for horror movie fans.
Blumhouse will curate the Stanley Film Center’s 10,000-square-foot exhibition space in partnership with the Colorado Office of Film, Television and Media. The exhibit is described as a “mini-Academy Museum dedicated to horror” and will include props and other items from Blumhouse’s catalog of film, TV and games.
Governor Jared Polis and the Colorado Office of Film, Television and Media, a division of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT), announced that Blumhouse said, “Here’s Blumhouse! This iconic Colorado hotel will now have a new element of fun and fright for Coloradans and visitors from around the world, boosting tourism and strengthening our economy. I look forward to seeing the exhibit and am happy that our administration can help make this possible.”
Jason Blum, CEO of Blumhouse, added: “The Stanley Hotel is a sacred place for horror fans and this makes this presence at the Stanley Film Center a natural extension for Blumhouse. Fans will get closer than ever to their favorite films, even if they may want to keep their distance with some of the “items” in our collection. We’re excited to get to work, but first we need to get out of the hedge maze.”
John Cullen, President of the Grand Heritage Hotel Group, also said: “Bringing Blumhouse to the Stanley is exciting and terrifying at the same time. We’ve searched the world for the right partner to bring the Stanley Film Center’s exhibit space to life as a horror destination, and there’s no one better than Blumhouse. With the support of the state of Colorado and Blumhouse’s boundless creativity and global track record of success, we hope to create something truly special that honors and celebrates the past, present and future of horror.”
Colorado is contributing $46 million to build the Stanley Film Center. To facilitate bonds that will finance the final construction of the facilities.
Jeff Kraft, Deputy Director of OEDIT, shared, “OEDIT and EDC worked with each initiative on a case-by-case basis providing support to ensure the success of the project. The partnership between Grand Heritage Hotel Group, LLC and the Stanley Film Center offers unique potential to attract new visitors to Colorado.”
Colorado Film Commissioner Donald Zuckerman continued, “We are thrilled to support the development of the Stanley Film Center and can think of no better environment to showcase Blumhouse’s contributions to the horror genre. This partnership will ensure that Colorado becomes the premier destination for celebrating horror and attracting new visitors to Estes Park and our state from across the country and beyond.”
The Stanley Film Center’s main building will be at least 67,000 square feet and is estimated to cost more than $70 million to complete and furnish.
