BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER producer Dolly Parton offers updates on the series’ revival

Dolly Parton is an uncredited producer of the original classic series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. If it weren’t for her, this series wouldn’t have been made. It was announced several years ago that a revival of the series was in development, and in a recent interview with Business Insider, Parton offered a promising update on the project. She said:

“They’re still working on it. They are thinking of bringing it back and renovating it.”

Parton didn’t go into specifics about the project or mention who is involved, but something is still happening and one day we might actually see this revival happen.

Creator of the series Joss Whedon was developing the revival with the writer Monica Owusu-Breen (Agents of SHIELD). The series has been described as “contemporary, based on the mythology of the original”. About a year ago it was reported that the project had been put on hold. I guess Whedon is no longer involved for obvious reasons.

In a past interview, Buffy was the main character Sarah Michelle Gellar spoke about Parton’s involvement with the series:

“Little known fact, the legend Dolly Parton was a producer and, you know, we never saw her. At first we would get Christmas presents that would have our name on them and I would think, “She doesn’t know who I am.” And then one day someone asked her about it and she complimented the show and my performance. And I was like, “Oh, I can die now.” Dolly Parton knows who I am and she thinks I’m good.’ Her partner was Sandy Gallin and they produced Buffy.

If this reboot goes forward, it will be interesting to see what the creative team does with it and will it actually match the storytelling quality of the original series. Speaking about the reboot, Gellar said:

“I’m all for them continuing the story, because there’s the story of female empowerment. I love the way the show left it: “Every girl who has power can have power.” It’s perfectly set up for someone else to have the power. But like I said, Buffy’s metaphors were the horrors of adolescence. I think I look young, but I’m not a teenager.”

What would you like to see from a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot?
