All these years after Studio Ghibli came out The enchanted city in 2001, director Hayao Miyazaki answered one of the questions about No Face and his true identity, and it’s a very intriguing and profound revelation of meaning.
This insight came from Nippon TV, which hosts a prime-time movie block called Kinyo Roadshow every Friday. The first film scheduled in 2024 was The enchanted cityand during the event, the network live-tweeted details about the film, including this information from Miyazaki:
“Who exactly is No Face? Director Hayao Miyazaki says, ‘There are many people like No Face among us… he’s the kind of person who wants to attach himself to others but has no sense of himself. They’re everywhere.'”
Miyazaki shared this information years ago, but it’s one of those things that has been overlooked by a lot of people. I didn’t know this until today, and No Face’s identity is actually deeper than I expected as it represents those who have no sense of self identity and adopt new personalities to adapt to their surroundings. This explains why No Face is transparent and why it has those big personality changes throughout the film.
