WHAT IF…? The director explains why they weren’t able to use the X-Men in the animated series

From Marvel What if…? the animated series were great and it was fun to see them play with some of their MCU characters in unique and interesting ways. In case you’re wondering why they’ve already played with any of the X-Men characters in the series, director Bryan Andrews offered an explanation:

“They were pretty much out of the question. They said, ‘We need to do it in live action first and then you can do it.’ And we say, ‘Ah, man!’ We would have loved to play with all kinds of toys. But there are limits.”

Marvel Studios is getting closer to introducing the X-Men. Deadpool 3 will feature many X-Men characters but we don’t know what will happen next. We don’t know if any characters from the upcoming film will actually end up in the MCU for an extended period or if they will be used to create an entirely new cast of X-Men characters. The X-Men are coming to the MCU though!

Andrews was also asked about it What if…? The release schedule for Season 3 after the long gap between Season 1 and Season 2, and explained:

“They move things around. Every time I thought it was like, ‘Oh, it’s going to be this!’ It’s like, ‘It’s going to move a little!’ So, I would also hate to say something and get people’s hopes out and then have them dashed because of the beast of production and when things get moving.”

“I thought it might come out at the end of the year, in 2024, but that would be difficult.”

“There is some other group of people who are planning things [release] and they’re moving things around the board, and I don’t know where we are right now, as well as [Marvel Zombies]. I’m still working on Zombies at the same time, and it’s going to be crazy and come out, but that keeps changing too, right? So I wish I could help you but I can’t!”

So, let’s just say that season 3 will most likely release in 2025.
