It was already announced in 2019 David Ayer he would direct a remake of the classic 1967 action film The Dirty Dozen for Warner Bros. There haven’t been many updates since the project was announced, but today we have one to share with you!
In a recent interview with /Film, Ayer was asked about the status of the film and this was his response:
“I think we’re still trying to find the right angle. It’s always difficult to take such a beloved and iconic IP and then answer the question ‘Why now? Why is it worth remaking now?’ So it’s always a moving target.”
The original film is fantastic and I can definitely see what Ayer means in this comment he made. What’s the point of a remake if you can’t make a better film than the original, and for a film like The Dirty Dozenit will not be easy.
Speaking previously about this film, Ayer indicated that he hopes the film launches a new action franchise:
“I think it’s just an opportunity for a great ensemble action franchise. I’m going to have a really solid main character, and I see it in the vein of the Mission: Impossible films, or the Fast and Furious franchise, which I wrote the first one for. It’s like anything else, you build a cool family of characters and then you watch them bounce off each other and drive each other crazy.
Ayer also discussed the setting of his film and that it will be set in the present day and not during World War II like the original film:
“For me the Second World War is the Holy War. Doing a funnier, more comedic version of that war, I don’t think I could do it. But absolutely, I can do that today, and have that fun and that anarchy and that wildness, and have modern characters with incredible diversity and real voices.
The Dirty Dozen it’s based on E. M. Nathanson novel inspired by a real band called Filthy Thirteen. The story was about a top secret mission launched before the invasion of Normandy. It followed a group of hardened army prisoners who “had been trained to conduct a suicide mission, to mount an assault on a castle in Brittany where dozens of high-ranking German officers were meeting. The hope is that eliminating the leaders will help with the impending D-Day invasion. Those who survive are offered grace.”
Do you think Ayer will actually be able to make a great remake of? The Dirty Dozen?
