To celebrate the recent 20th anniversary of his iconic romantic comedy How to lose a guy in 10 daysmade at the end of the golden age of the romantic comedy, star Kate Hudson appeared on the talk show The sightto discuss not only his beloved opposite film Matthew McConaugheybut also why he believes we are no longer seeing films of the same caliber in this genre. How to lose a guy in 10 days grossed $105 million at the domestic box office and $177 million worldwide, and by comparison, the recently released romantic comedy Anyone but youhero Sydney Sweeney AND Glen Powellhas earned a whopping $38 million and counting worldwide.
Hudson said of the current state of the genre:
“It’s hard to get movie stars to make romantic comedies. That’s a big part of the equation… is having that event. If we can get more Marvel guys like… hey, come make a romantic comedy! This is also part of the formula. That event.”
Not only is it difficult to get male actors to join a romantic comedy, which is silly, because if done right, it doesn’t hurt their careers, but the amount of decent scripts written for the genre are few and far between.
Hudson went on to say:
“I think it’s a question of the writing and how we’re investing in telling the story of the script and the directors. If you look at classic romantic comedies or movies that last forever, because they do, they’re the ones that last forever; people go back and forth – they had the best writers. Nora Efron! It’s more about how studios invest in talent.”
Although it seemed to Hudson that leading men were hard to find, Aquaman star Jason Momoa he recently expressed interest in making a romantic comedy and even proposed making one 50 first Dates sequel to Drew Barrymore. He told Men’s Health in 2020 that he would like to play a “protagonist in a romantic comedy, but so far no one will hire me for that.” Um, he’s crazy. How did he not get cast in a romantic comedy? Let’s make this happen.
But as for Hudson’s point about screenplays and movie studios investing in these types of stories, we reported it a year ago Julia Roberts she said she would have liked to continue making romantic comedies for the past 20 years, but there simply weren’t any good scripts.
So it seems like the solution is to make a lot of fun, smart romantic comedies starring Jason Momoa. Go ahead, Hollywood.
