If you’ve seen the disappointing first trailer for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, in addition to the fact that Godzilla is pink, you’ve probably also noticed King Kong sporting a bionic gauntlet. Yes, Legendary Entertainment and director Adam Winger they are doing wonders with this franchise and these characters.
During a recent interview with Total Film, Winger teased Kong’s bionic arm in the film, saying:
“It’s hard to say much more without spoiling anything, because he has one of my favorite introductions of any character I’ve ever done in my films.”
He then went on to explain:
“What I will say is that I would like to play it [action figure] if I were a kid! And while Apex isn’t present in this story in a literal way, we suggest that Monarch absorbed much of the Apex technology after the last film. It is insinuated that the glove Kong is wearing is Apex technology.”
This seems to confirm that the reason for all these unnecessary changes to Godzilla and Kong was implemented to sell toys to children. It makes sense given that the film feels like a big-budget, but mediocre Saturday morning cartoon.
Look, I’m a purist when it comes to certain things like these characters, so I’m not thrilled with anything I see from this movie. Everything has been ridiculously downplayed and that makes me sad. The last few movies that Legendary has released for this Monsterverse franchise have been disappointing.
My expectations are very low for this movie, so if I see it, maybe it will be better than I expected. It got decent reactions from early test screenings. We’ll just have to wait and see.

The film is the protagonist Rebecca Sala (Godzilla vs. Kong), Brian Tyree Henry (Godzilla vs. Kong), Dan Stevens (Legion), Kaylee Hottle (Godzilla vs. Kong), Alex Felci (The Batman) AND Fala Chen (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings).
The screenplay is by Terry Rossio (Godzilla vs. Kong, THE Pirates of the Caribbean series), Simon Barrett (You’re next) AND Jeremy Slater (Knight of the Moon), from a story by Rossio, Wingard & Barrett, based on the character “Godzilla” owned and created by TOHO Co., Ltd..
The film will be released on April 12, 2024.
