During a recent interview on Happy, sad, confused podcasts, Gary Oldmann talked about his time playing Sirius Black in the Harry Potter movie. One of the things that she shared in the interview was the most difficult scene that she had to shoot in the film, and it’s one that you probably wouldn’t expect. Not only is it the hardest scene he had to shoot for this film, it’s also the hardest thing he’s ever had to do. It’s the scene where Harry Potter throws his patronus onto the frozen lake to save Black.
Oldman had nothing to do but lie there, but it wasn’t easy for him! He explained why filming that simple scene was so difficult for him, saying:
“Actually, [laughs] this is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, strangely enough, it was in one of, I forget which, in one of the Harry Potter [movies] I had to lie down next to that lake. There was like a frozen lake, and I’m like dead and my soul is leaving my body, and then it appears.
Oldman went on to explain that these were long shots and that lying on a frozen lake can be quite uncomfortable. He said:
“It was just me, lying down. But, Harry Potter, it took forever. It was slow and we would be at the scene for weeks. You know what I mean? Normally, we can shoot it in two days. I was lying anyway. What they did was they built that lake inside the studio and cooled it and froze it. And I had to lie there for a week, day after day, doing nothing.
“[I was] don’t do anything, but… I was like, ‘Someone might have, I think my kidneys are getting a little cold.’ Then they put the little hot water bottle under you and you just lie there like that. And then on the third day you say, “My neck is killing me in this position.” Then they would put a little pillow underneath you.
It’s understandable why it was so difficult for him to shoot the scene. That doesn’t sound funny. You’d think they would have had a lookalike to put in his place for some time, but I guess not. He had to earn his money with a little torture.
