In the decades since its release, the sci-fi horror masterpiece, Event horizon, continued to captivate audiences with its dark and disturbing atmosphere. The film, directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, has always been surrounded by rumors of a lost director, containing scenes so extreme they made test audiences sick. Recently, actor Jason Isaacsknown for his role as Lucius Malfoy in Harry Potter series, shared some interesting insights into these infamous “definitely illegal” deleted scenes.
During a promotional interview for his latest film, the Cary Grant biopic Archie, Isaacs spoke about his experiences filming Event horizon. When asked about the elusive alternate version of the film in an interview with Yahoo, Isaacs explained:
“They filmed it on a stage next to us, and there are things that are definitely illegal to do now, probably illegal to do then, with a lot of people with certain things wrong with their body or their mind. … And Paul’s best friend was shooting second unit, and he kept coming back to our stage saying, “You won’t believe what I saw this morning.”
The surrounding tradition Event horizon‘s troubled production is a story of missed deadlines, panicked executives, and extreme content that pushed the boundaries of acceptability. Paramount had to rush the film’s release due to the film’s unexpected success Titanic, leaving the production team with limited time to finalize the film. When Paramount executives finally saw the film during test screenings, they were reportedly horrified by its content, which they had never seen before.
Isaacs talked about one of the film’s craziest sequences that depicted the gruesome fate of the ship’s crew and helped spread panic among test audiences. The actor’s comments suggest the potential illegality of the cut material, but the actor also expressed skepticism about the existence of Anderson’s longer cut. Speaking about this, Isaacs shared:
“I don’t know about this Director’s Cut. If you watch the movie, it occasionally flashes—literally flash frames—what happened to the ship when she went to hell and there’s all sorts of what seems like, “is this an orgy?” Is it a massacre? What is going on?’ … I don’t think putting in more will make it work, and I don’t think more people’s views will make it work. Maybe Paul has some footage somewhere. I don’t think so, he never told me about it. I think it’s a bit of a myth, this director is the film. But I could be wrong, I didn’t direct it.”
Despite the fascination surrounding the lost scenes, the possibility of a Event horizon the extended cut remains uncertain. Anderson has expressed interest in reshooting deleted material to fully restore his original vision. Sam Neill, who starred in the film, showed support for this idea. However, it ultimately depends on Paramount executives’ willingness to approve the project and the cast’s willingness to participate. I doubt that will ever happen.
Regardless of whether any of these crazy deleted scenes exist, it definitely seems like making the movie was one of the craziest, craziest experiences for the cast and crew.
