In a recent New Yorker profile, Craig Mazin wrote The last of us And Chernobylcalls The Queen’s Gambit co-creator Scott Frank “one of the greatest screenwriters of all time.”
A long known quantity Take Shorty, Out of sight, A walk among the tombstones, marley and me, The glutton And LoganFrank tells the magazine about his lesser-known work: the nearly sixty films he’s worked on as a screenwriter, sometimes earning $300,000 a week.
According to the article, films on this lesser-known list include: Private James Ryan, The ring, Severity, Evening at the museum, infidelity, Planet of the Apes: Prevolution, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Evening at the museum and, says Frank, “a lot of the X-Men movies.” Which one? “I can’t remember their titles,” he said.
“Ninety percent of what I get is character work,” Frank told the New Yorker. But Paul Thomas Anderson claimed that Frank also had a masterful understanding of structure.
“He’s a formalist, and to me that’s the highest compliment,” Anderson said. “This is what I have always admired and what I wanted to pursue. He understood classical structure in a way that most people never would.”
Frank belittles the awards.
“I’m a bit of a hacker,” he once said.
Of his success, he told the New Yorker: “I’m very happy, not particularly distressed. Even my demons are bored.”
Frank’s next project is Mr. Spades for AMC, for which he and Tom Fontana serve as co-creators, writers and executive producers. Frank is also a director.
