Gary Oldman says his portrayal of Sirius Black in the HARRY POTTER films was ‘mediocre’

If you ask any Harry Potter fan what they think Gary Oldmann playing Sirius Black in the movies, you’ll probably get a warm response. He embodied the Azkaban escapee, who was once considered terrifying, but who then evolved into Harry’s beloved godfather, even an uncle of sorts. Sirius bonded Harry to his parents in a way his relatives never had, giving him the gift of family for the first time since his parents left him as a child. But it turns out Oldman thought his performance was just “mediocre.”

In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast (via SFFGazette.com), Oldman explained:

“I think my work is mediocre. No, I think so. Maybe if I had read the books like Alan [Rickman], if I had been ahead of time, if I had known what was going to happen, I honestly think I would have played differently. I’ll tell you what it is. It’s like anything, if I sat down and looked at something and said, ‘My God, I’m amazing,’ it would be a very sad day, because you want to make the next thing better.”

Oldman isn’t the only one in his position as an actor who doesn’t like watching himself on screen, but it’s also entirely logical that he would have felt less prepared to play the character if he hadn’t read the books, especially with the co-stars they had a complete knowledge of the entire story. He would have to read the books for his preparation and his process, but I’m sure he had a small window of time between accepting the job and getting in front of the character.

Regardless of the actor’s opinion on his performance, he is still loved by fans of the books and films, and I think that counts for a lot.
