While director Michael Mann is visiting the press for his latest feature film, Ferrarimembers of the press keep asking him about his next film project, which is Heat 2. In this recent update on the film, Mann talks casting, bringing characters back to life, and where he is in the development process. He told The Playlist:
“It will be a combination [of CG and makeup]. And that won’t be the case [Robert De Niro] and Al [Pacino] playing McCauley and Hanna. And it actually starts eight years before the movie. It starts in 1988, and then it’ll jump to 2000. But I don’t really know who to cast until I write the script, but I’m writing it right now. And Warner Bros. has been very patient.”
Mann was then asked if the sequel could be a TV series, and he replied: “Of course, but I’m not interested in doing it in long form. I’m only interested in doing it as a movie, on the same scale.” like the 1995 film.”
The sequel will tell the story of what led up to the events of the first film, set in 1989, and what happened after, set in 2002. It covers “the formative years of homicide detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) and elite criminals Neil McCauley (De Niro), Chris Shiherlis (Kilmer) and Nate (Jon Voight), and features the same extraordinary ambition, scope, rich characterizations and attention to detail as the epic.”
This new story “leads into the events of the film and then goes beyond, introducing new characters on both sides of the law, new high-level heists and breathtaking cinematic action sequences. From the streets of Los Angeles to the holy of holies of rival Taiwanese crime syndicates in Paraguay to a massive drug cartel money laundering operation just across the border in Mexico, Heat 2 highlights the dangerous workings of international criminal organizations and the agents who pursue them while providing a comprehensive portrait of the men and women who inhabit both operatic in scope, Heat 2 is gripping, moving and tragic: a masterpiece of crime fiction from one of American cinema’s most innovative and influential directors.
It is explained that the book jumps between two time periods, “the first follows Chris Shiherlis as he tries to evade the LAPD and Detective Vincent Hanna after the bank robbery gone wrong and moves into new territory in the area of three borders and in Southeast Asia. The second storyline takes readers back to Chicago in 1988, when McCauley, Shiherlis, and their high-flying crew are picking up scores on the West Coast, the U.S.-Mexico border, and Chicago. At the same time, Hanna is cutting her teeth as a rising star in the Chicago Police Department, chasing down an ultraviolent gang of home invaders. The consequences of McCauley’s scores and Hanna’s pursuit cause unexpected repercussions in a parallel narrative.
Earlier this year, it was reported that Ferrari was leading Adam Driver was in negotiations to play the young Neil McCauley, Robert De Niroin the film, but this has not been confirmed.
