Jon Favreauthe director with whom he launched the MCU Iron Man AND Iron Man 2, he also played the role of Happy Hogan in the MCU. He returned to reprise his role in Marvel’s first season What if…? animated series and will return in the second season!
Happy Hogan actually got his own episode in Season 2 titled “What If… Happy Hogan Saved Christmas?”, the synopsis of which reads: “Iron Man’s delivery man is the only thing standing between Tony’s old nemesis Stark, Justin Hammer, and his siege”. on Avengers Tower during the annual heroes festival.”
During a panel at a press conference for What if…?Creator AC Bradley talked about bringing Favreau into the role of Happy Hogan again, and revealed the one request the actor and director made when he came to record his lines for the first season, saying that in the second season “I want to be The Freaks”. Bradley said:
“In season two, we knew we wanted to do a Darcy episode and we kind of had that in the bag. And then Jon Favreau, I’m allowed to tell this story. First of all, he’s amazing. He’s one of the absolute characters in human beings kinder and more talented human beings […] and so when he came to do the first season, he made a deal as a joke. He says: “I’ll do the first season, but with the second season I’ll be the headlines.” And I want to be The Freak.'”
In case you didn’t know, Happy Hogan became known as The Freak after being hit by the Enervator ray machine, which transformed him into a giant, savage, nearly mindless humanoid with superhuman strength. Bradley admitted he had never heard of The Freak before and said:
“We say, ‘Oh no, what are we? [agreeing] TO?’ And then as we were talking about the episode, we thought, ‘Let’s do a paean to Mr. Favreau.’ And we started watching his amazing films. And we also mentioned “The Chef Show” there. […] and we were watching “Elf” and we were like, “No, we can’t do “Elf.” Let’s do “Die Hard.” Which is my favorite movie since childhood. Absolutely. I memorized it, I think, when I turned 10. “
So, the story of Happy Hogan in What If…? it’s really a tribute to Die Hard as Happy crawling through the ventilation shafts of Stark Tower. We’ll just have to wait and see how his transformation into The Freak will play out in the story! This will be a fun episode to watch!
In What if…? Season 2, “The Watcher continues the journey as our guide across the vast multiverse, introducing new and familiar faces throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The animated anthology series questions, revisits and twists classic Marvel cinematic moments with an incredible voice cast that includes an array of stars reprising their iconic roles.”
What if…? the second season will premiere on December 22, 2023 on Disney+.
