The director of GODZILLA MINUS ONE says the sequel will include some familiar characters

Many people liked the director Takashi Yamazaki’S Godzilla minus one, and it’s one of those movies that movie buffs can’t stop talking about. I mean, it’s the best Godzilla movie ever made and fans really want to see Yamazaki direct the sequel.

While the director isn’t sure if he’ll direct the sequel, he’s prepped the movie for one, and now he’s saying that if he makes it, we’ll see some familiar faces.

During a recent Q&A hosted by Movie Walker, a fan asked whether Yamazaki would prefer to revisit Godzilla as a sequel or through an entirely new project. After thinking about it, Yamazaki shared that he would like to make a sequel Godzilla minus one. He explained:

“My honest feelings, I would love to see a continuation of those people’s story. If I could do it [A Godzilla Minus One sequel]I’d like to make a film about what happens to them afterwards.”

Well, I’m sure Toho will offer him the opportunity to make that sequel, he just has to take it. The director had previously explained that he had laid the foundations for a sequel and how the open ending would develop Godzilla minus one can lead to the next chapter of the story:

“Godzilla is both a monster and a god. Godzilla is the Tatari-gami who appears in Princess Mononoke. After all, if you really think about it, isn’t it strange that the thing awakened by America’s nuclear tests is about to attack Japan? However, if consider yourself as the Tatari-gami, it makes sense. A story about everyone working together to suppress an attack by the Tatari-gami.”

Tatari-gami means “curse of the gods” and was the demon found in Studio Ghibli Princess Mononoke. It is a manifestation of negative energy that causes catastrophes and casts curses. Yamazaki believes that these curses have a lot in common with Godzilla and explains:

“Godzilla was born as a result of an American nuclear test and yet he was created in Japan. Isn’t it incredibly absurd that this should happen? But I think the Japanese feel they have to accept it and consider it a curse.

“Even Princess Mononoke’s Tatari-gami comes to a village he has no connection to, ruins it, and leaves a curse behind. That’s how I felt after making this film. I felt making a Godzilla film it was a divine ritual. The ritual [gathers] the anxieties of the world at that moment and evokes them as a cursed deity that must be appeased.”

Godzilla minus one ends with our main characters reuniting as Koichi learns that Noriko survived a destructive attack from Godzilla. We then learn that there is a hidden black mark on Noriko’s neck, telling us that she has been cursed by the kaiju.

When previously asked if the director would make a sequel, he replied: “I would love to see someone else’s Godzilla, but I want to do one next time too. I have very complicated feelings.”

The film is set in Japan 1945-1947. “After the war, Japan was reduced to nothing. Godzilla appears and throws the country into a negative state. Against the most desperate situation in the history of Japan, how – and with whom – will Japan resist?”

What would you like to see a sequel for? Godzilla minus one?
