When director Wes Ball acute Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes to Disney and 20th Century Studios, initially described it as “Apocalypse with the monkeys.” Refers to the director Mel GibsonThe 2006 historical Mayan adventure film, which was a fantastic film!
Apocalypse is set in the ancient Mayan civilization. The story follows a young tribesman named Jaguar Paw, who must save his pregnant wife and child from a ruthless band of Mayan warriors after their village is sacked. The film is a visceral and intense journey through the lush and dangerous jungle, showcasing the brutality and sophistication of Mayan culture as Jaguar Paw fights to survive and protect his family.
During an interview with Empire, producer Joe Hartwick states that the main goal of this film is to offer a film that is a little more fun and adventurous than the other films in the series:
“The last two movies were about Caesar’s burden. Just like The Dark Knight, they felt heavy: super fun, but super intense. We’re going in a different direction. Noa still has a burden, but it’s wrapped up in a different way.” adventure level, especially since the character has never been exposed to the outside world before. So we see him seeing the world for the first time.”
Visual effects supervisor Erik Winquist he went on to say that they are simply embracing what made 1968 original Planet of the Apes such great movies. He teased a big river rapids chase scene that he described as a “big, catastrophic biblical event.” He added:
“It was evident on the page that it was going to be tricky in a number of cases, where you have wet monkeys. You start having to deal with how water affects fur and how fur affects water. Luckily we just came off a film called The Way Of Water, so we were able to leverage a lot of the experience and technology that went into that film.”
It was previously revealed that the film will be a cross between the Caesar trilogy and the original’s timeline Planet of the Apes movie. During a previous interview with the director, he also talked about the adventure aspect of the film and how he wished his film had a bit of Star Wars and a younger spirit. He explained:
“When I started working on it, I said, ‘I feel like Apes needs a little Star Wars.’ It’s all still very much grounded in reality, but it’s essentially a quest narrative. Our main character is the young and impressionable Noa [Owen Teague] – meets characters along the way and awakens when he finds himself in a place that will test him, and ultimately becomes his true self. We didn’t make fun of it, or Disneyfied it, if I may say so! But we brought a younger spirit.”
Speaking about the film’s setting, Ball shared:
“I wanted to take a big leap forward in time. It’s quite telling that Caesar is still a spirit in the film, but most of his living relatives are not in this picture. If the last three films were about the Stone Age, here we can see what happens when they enter the Bronze Age.”
In the film, “Some groups have never heard of Caesar, while others have distorted his teachings to build thriving empires. In this setting, an ape leader begins enslaving other groups to find human technology, while another ape, who has seen his clan being taken, embarks on a journey to find freedom. A young human woman becomes the key to the latter’s quest, even though she has plans of her own.”
The cast includes Owen Teague (It), Freya Allen (The witcher), AND Peter Macon (The Orville). The film’s screenplay comes from Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds), Rick Jaffa AND Amanda Silver (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), AND Patrick Aison (Prey). She is also a co-star Travis Jeffrey (Uninterrupted), Neil Sandilands (Sweetness), Sara Wisemann (One of us is lying), Ras-Samuel Welda’abzgi (The clearing), Lydia Peckham (Cowboy bebop), AND Kevin Durand.
The film will be released in theaters on May 24, 2024.
