Quentin Tarantino’s Unmade STAR TREK Described as “The Greatest STAR TREK Movie” and Here’s Why It’s Not Made

At some point inside Quentin TarantinoDuring his directorial career, he was developing an R rating Star Trek film for Paramount Pictures. His film would have been very different and unique, something fans had never seen before in the franchise. He’s a Star Trek movie that I would have liked to see made, but Paramount had other plans.

The film’s screenplay was written by Revenant AND The boys on the boat screenwriter Mark L. Smith, and in a recent interview with Collider, he talked about his experience working on the film. Smith explained: “So Quentin came into Bad Robot, we met there, and he had this proposal, this idea of a version of Star Trek that he wanted to make.” Smith added that he was mesmerized by Tarantino’s speech, noting that he would like to “put in something to record while he’s delivering his dialogue, and the way he delivers it is just wonderful.”

While Tarantino had come up with the idea, he wanted another writer to write the film, and eventually contacted Smith and asked if he would write the draft, which he did. Smith went on to talk about his experience working on the screenplay and what Tarantino was thinking at this point in his career. He reveals why the project never got made, and it was because the director couldn’t understand it Star Trek it would be his last film. He said:

“It was a different thing, but it was such a particular and different kind of story that Quentin wanted to tell in a way that suited my kind of sensibility. So I wrote it, Quentin and I went back and forth, would he do something something about about it, and then he started worrying about the number, his kind of unofficial number of movies. I remember we were talking, and he said, ‘If I could just wrap my head around the idea that Star Trek might be my last movie.’ , the last thing I do. Is this how I want to end it?’ And I think that was the obstacle that he could never get over, so the script is still there on his desk. I know he said a lot of nice things about it. I would love for that to happen. It’s just one of those things. That I can never imagine happening. But it would be the greatest Star Trek movie, not because of my writing, but simply because of what Tarantino would do with it. It was just kind of crazy.”

Smith would not offer any details about the story in this interview, saying, “I can’t say anything about the story. It would kill me.” But he revealed that it would be a “Hard R” film with the same level of violence that Tarantino is known for making. He said:

“But I think his vision was just to go hard. It was a hard R. It was going to be some Pulp Fiction violence. Not a lot of the language, we saved a couple of things just for special characters to put it into the world of Star Trek, but it was just Tarantino’s edginess and kind of style, man, that he was bringing us in. That would have been cool.”

Smith continued to share his excitement for Tarantino’s project because it would be very different from anything else in the franchise, saying:

“I liked it because I think it’s different, but in this way [Thor] Ragnarok changed things. It was like I suddenly had a different feel for things Marvel. It was like, ‘This is funny. This is different.’ And I guess the Guardians [of the Galaxy] on some level, but it was just like a different vibe and that’s what I thought he could bring to Star Trek: it was just a different feel.”

Smith had previously talked about the film and shared some insights into the story, saying:

“We wanted to [The Midnight Sky] be in the future, but not so far in the future that you think it can’t happen. I watched many different TED talks regarding the planets that would be chosen and how the ship would operate. As they go through space, I held it where they enter blackout zones – they lose communication for a few weeks, so any messages they received from home were at least a couple of weeks behind. Sure, I cheated in a few areas, but nothing major. It wasn’t like anyone had been teleported!”

Smith also explained that he was drawn to the series’ “deep” characters, saying, “All the relationships felt real and something I could identify with.” He then went on to reveal that Captain Kirk would be in the film and that they would have a lot of fun playing with the character:

“I love Picard. And Kirk is always so funny. Tarantino and I had a lot of fun with him, because Kirk is just William Shatner, you know? It’s like: you’re not sure who’s who, so you can lean on that! Because you look at Chris Pine and he plays Kirk, but he also plays William Shatner a little bit.

It was previously reported that Tarantino’s film “is based on an episode of the classic Star Trek series that takes place largely on Earth in a 1930s gangster setting.”

The episode this story is based on is titled “A Piece of the Action”, which was the seventeenth episode of the second season. It aired on January 12, 1968. The story centered on Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, and Doctor McCoy as they teleport to a planet called Iotia where they discover a planetary government modeled after the Chicago gangs of the 1920s.

Tarantino previously said he wanted to bring some elements of Pulp Fiction into the series as well. He also said:

“I don’t know if I will or not. I have to understand, but Mark wrote a really interesting script. I really like. There are some things I need to work on, but I really enjoyed it.

It’s a shame that this Star Trek movie will never see the light of day.
