When James Gunn AND Pietro Safran were put in charge of running DC Studios, it was made clear that Batman designs that director and producer Matt Reeves they were developing would be its own thing and separate from what Gunn was planning for his DC cinematic universe.
Well, it looks like plans have changed as Gunn has confirmed that Reeves’ untitled Arkham Asylum series will be set in Gunn’s DCU.
Gunn recently responded to a post on Threads asking if Reeves is working on any other DC projects beyond this one Batman – Part II, The Penguinand the untitled Arkham Asylum spin-off series. Gunn confirmed that those are the only titles the director is currently developing. He then revealed that the Arkham series will be set in the next DCU.
When asked for further clarification, Gunn said: “Yes. We love Matt as a director and producer, so he will be producing stories in both his The Batman universe and the DCU.
If so, doesn’t that mean it? The Batman Is the universe technically part of the DCU too? Speaking previously about the Arkham series, Reeves said: “We’ve actually done this before [moved] more in the realm of what exactly would happen in the world of Arkham as it relates to our movie and some of the characters and their origins… almost leaning into the idea of… it’s like a horror movie or a haunted house that is Arkham . The idea, again the way Gotham is a character in the movie, I really want Arkham to exist as a character. You enter this environment and meet these characters in a way that feels really fresh. And so in our work on Gotham, that story started to evolve and started to create sensations [like], ‘Wait, we should really lean into this.’ And then that’s where it ended.
With these comments, it certainly seems like the Arkham series would be directly connected The Batman. But Gunn said the series “hasn’t been changed” and that it was always intended to be part of his and Safran’s universe from the beginning.
Gun said: “It was one of the first pitches we bought when Peter and I came on board. I don’t know the permutations she went through before that point.
I imagine the project has undergone some changes and is no longer part of Reeves’ project. The Batman universe.
