GODZILLA MINUS ONE director explains how the film’s ending could lead to a sequel

Godzilla minus one continues to dominate the American box office and fans are eager to see if he will direct Takashi Yamazaki he’ll be back to do a sequel. One day we’ll see Toho make a sequel, but we don’t know what exactly the story will tell. However, the director has laid the foundation for a sequel and when he talked about what the open ending will be like Godzilla minus one may lead to a sequel, Yamazaki said:

“Godzilla is both a monster and a god. Godzilla is the Tatari-gami who appears in Princess Mononoke. After all, if you really think about it, isn’t it strange that the thing awakened by America’s nuclear tests is about to attack Japan? However, if consider yourself as the Tatari-gami, it makes sense. A story about everyone working together to suppress an attack by the Tatari-gami.”

For those of you who aren’t sure what Yamazaki is talking about regarding Tatari-gami, it means “curse of the gods” and was the demon used in the Studio Ghibli films Princess Mononoke. It is a manifestation of negative energy that causes catastrophes and casts curses. Yamazaki believes that these curses have a lot in common with Godzilla and explains:

“Godzilla was born as a result of an American nuclear test and yet he was created in Japan. Isn’t it incredibly absurd that this should happen? But I think the Japanese feel they have to accept it and consider it a curse.

“Even Princess Mononoke’s Tatari-gami comes to a village he has no connection to, ruins everything, and leaves a curse behind. That’s how I felt after making this movie. I felt making a Godzilla movie it was a divine ritual. The ritual [gathers] the anxieties of the world at that moment and evokes them as a cursed deity that must be appeased.”

No other director will truly understand Yamazaki’s vision for the sequel, which means that if it is fully realized in its proper form, Yamazaki will have to be the one to tell the story. I love where he’s at with Godzilla and his future and after hearing him talk about this, I really hope he comes back to direct the sequel!

Godzilla minus one ends with our main characters reuniting as Koichi learns that Noriko survived a destructive attack from Godzilla. It was an emotional moment, but then we learn that there is a hidden black mark on Noriko’s neck. After this recent insight into where the director wants the story to go, it seems that Noriko has been cursed by the kaiju.

When previously asked if the director would make a sequel, he replied: “I would love to see someone else’s Godzilla, but I want to do one next time too. I have very complicated feelings.”

The film is set in Japan 1945-1947. “After the war, Japan was reduced to nothing. Godzilla appears and throws the country into a negative state. Against the most desperate situation in the history of Japan, how – and with whom – will Japan resist?”

The director recently shared a message to Godzilla fans in North America thanking them for their support of the film and its success, saying, “We are thrilled with the tremendous response in North America. I have read fan feedback on social media and am very encouraged by the passionate comments based on in-depth analysis of the film. I heard that in some rooms there was even applause. Thank you for warmly receiving our Godzilla.”
