In 2010, a Broadway musical titled Spider-Man: Turn Off the Darkness you take to the stage, having faced obstacle after obstacle. The musical was highly anticipated and there was a lot of excitement around it, like that of Broadway The Lion King director Julie Taymor was on board to steer the ship, and Bono and U2’s The Edge signed on to provide lyrics.
But it faced a problematic development process from the start, including numerous delays, technical difficulties and safety issues during rehearsals and performances. He became infamous for the high number of injuries suffered by cast members, which led to several cast changes and, ultimately, mixed reviews.
Spider-Man: Turn Off the Darkness it was also confusing for fans of the property, as the story took liberties with characters that felt unfamiliar and unnatural. The musical continued to have a relatively long run on Broadway, despite its problems, but ultimately closed after four years at a huge financial loss.
Now, a new script has entered the Hollywood Black List, which includes the best unproduced screenplays in the film industry. It is entitled The boy falls from the skyand follows the story of how Spider-Man: Turn Off the Darkness it went from the page to the stage. It is written by Bull Hunterwhich he previously wrote Digger! AND Bupkis. The screenplay synopsis reads: “An anxious playwright finds himself caught in a web of deceit, slights and intellectual property as he adapts his first Broadway musical, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Darkness. Based on a true story.”
It sounds like an interesting story, especially considering how many difficulties this production faced. I’m sure we’ve only heard half of it. Keep your eyes peeled for more information on the project and we’ll let you know as it develops.
