With Toho’s release Godzilla minus one and Studio Ghibli The boy and the heron, Japan had a fantastic run in the US this year! Both have reached milestones at the box office, which is pretty exciting to see!
Hayao Miyazaki’S The boy and the heron made history over the weekend as the film grossed nearly $13 million. With this haul, the film now represents the biggest three-day weekend for an original anime to date domestically. The record was previously held by The Secret World of Arrietty.
The boy and the heron beat the latest Hunger Games movie, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakeswhich grossed less than $10 million at the box office last weekend. Godzilla minus one took third place with $8.3 million after an already successful run. This was followed by Trolls 3and then there’s Disney Wishwhich grossed $5.3 million.
The boy and the heron is a beautifully made animated film and is a story worth watching on the big screen. It’s great to see people come out and support this film and I wish more people would come out and watch it. It’s so much better than the pointless nonsense that Disney and Pixar have been putting out.
The boy and the heron it would have done even better if there had been some clever marketing behind the film. They almost didn’t market the film at all! I’m not sure why Studio Ghibli decided to rein in the marketing, but if they had pushed the film harder, the film would have done even better. But, due to lack of marketing, it is still having great success at the box office.
The film’s official synopsis reads: “Through encounters with his friends and uncle, the story follows the psychological development of a teenager. He enters a magical world with a talking gray heron after finding an abandoned tower in his new town.
