Like all of you, I’m very curious to know what Noah Hawley he’s doing with his Alien series on FX. The guy tends to do really interesting, unique and unconventional things with the shows he develops and I have no doubt that he will deliver something special with this show.
During a recent interview with THR, star of the series David Rysdahl teased that the show will be something very different. He explained:
“Noah, similar to Fargo, takes the film and asks, ‘What is the DNA of this film? What is the perspective of the world? What themes are we addressing? What was the original intent of this film? Let me see if I can to play”. with this in a new way. So he’s doing some really interesting work on Alien, and it’s going to be a very different but very exciting take on what the original film was.
Hawley has previously spoken about his vision for the series and the tone he’s going for. She’s trying to replicate the overall tone and experience of the Alien franchise, but it’s a different kind of story:
“The reality is, when you get down to it, there are three brands of science fiction – Star Trek, Star Wars and Alien – and each of them has an absolutely unique feel. You would never confuse Star Trek for Alien, or Star Wars for Star Trek I don’t know if it’s as intimidating as it is an exciting challenge. When we started Fargo, I felt liberated because I thought, “Well, this is a really terrible idea to try to do a show called Fargo that’s adjacent to the movie, but it has nothing to do with the movie, that three people will watch it and two of them will hate watching it.’ On some level, I felt like I was free to go all out and give it my all, without playing it safe.
“Since then, I was going to make a Star Trek movie and I’ve been talking to FX about Alien for many years. I’ve gained confidence in my process and in this idea. All I do is go back to the Fargo movie, or Alien the movie and think: ‘Well, what did I feel while I was watching it?’ And then, I try to create those feelings in the audience by telling them a completely different story, but it’s not really about, “What are the elements of the movie that I need?”, or, “They had a car salesman, and I’m going to have a insurance salesman.”
The story of the series “is set before Ripley. It’s the first story set on Earth in the Alien series.” It was also revealed that it will be set towards “the end of the century we’re in, so 70-odd years from now.” It will also be the first Alien story set on Earth.
The project will blend “the timeless horror of the first Alien film with the non-stop action of the second, it will be a frightening thrill ride that will make people fall back on their seats.”
Hawley previously spoke about the project, saying: “It’s about how we’re caught between the primordial past and the artificial intelligence of our future, where both [are] trying to kill us. It is set on future Earth. Right now I describe it as Edison versus Westinghouse versus Tesla. Someone will monopolize the electricity. We just don’t know which one it is.”
He continued, “It’s a story also set on Earth. Alien stories are always trapped… Trapped in a prison, trapped in a spaceship. I thought it would be interesting to open it up a little bit so that the stakes were “What happens if you can’t contain it?” they are more immediate.”
The show is also the protagonist Sydney Chandler, Alex Lawther (The end of the fucking world) in the role of the male protagonist, a soldier named CJ, with Samuel Blenkin (Black mirror) as another main character called Boy Kavalier, a CEO. Other cast members include Essie Davis (Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries) in the role of Lady Silvia, Timothy OlyphantAND Adarsh Gourav (The White Tiger) as Slightly.
Production on the series will resume in early 2024.
