Greta Gerwig won gold at the box office BarbieThe film stars Margot Robbie as the title character and Ryan Gosling as Ken.
After the movie’s success, there were questions about whether there would be a sequel. Warner Bros. Neither Mattel has confirmed that anything is in the works, but in a recent interview, Gerwig was asked about a possible solution Barbie Spin-off revolves around Ken.
“I mean, the truth is, you know… I guess we’ll see,” Gerwig told Sharyn Alfonsi during one. 60 minutes Maintenance.
Gerwig coyly responded to Alfonsi’s question about a Ken film, saying she could not comment, but did not completely rule out the possibility.
The subject of an entire film about Gosling’s Ken came about after Gerwig said they had many ideas for the character that ended up not making it into the final draft of the script.
“We had way too much material for Ken. We would write and write and write,” Gerwig said.
Gerwig previously said that before she cast Gosling as Ken, she wrote the role with the actor in mind.
“We wrote his name in the script and everything… and [Gosling’s name] was everywhere,” Gerwig told the NYT. “And when we gave them the script, the studio said, ‘Oh, it’s so great that you know Ryan. And I was like, “Oh, I don’t know Ryan.” I’ve never met Ryan, I have no idea. “
Gosling ended up playing the role of Ken alongside Robbie, who also served as an executive producer on the film. Robbie reportedly canceled a possible sequel BarbieHe said the film was not written as a saga.
“I think we put everything into this. We didn’t set it up as a trilogy or anything like that,” Robbie told the station Associated Press. “Greta put everything into this film, so I can’t imagine what the next step would be.”
After the cinema screening at the beginning of the year Barbie will stream on Max from December 15.
