Matt Smith is the star and producer of the Sky series adaptation of Nick Cave’s novel The death of Bunny Munro. The project was written by Somewhere, boy scribe Pete Jackson.
Smith will take on the lead role and the story description reads: “After the suicide of his wife Libby, the sex addict, door-to-door beauty salesman and self-styled lothario finds himself burdened with a young son and only a vague concept of parenthood. Along with nine-year-old Bunny Junior, she embarks on an epic and increasingly out-of-control journey across the south of England as the two struggle to contain their grief in different ways.
Smith shared in a statement: “Working alongside Nick Cave is a great honor. It’s a brilliant exploration of love, pain and chaos. At its heart a deep, difficult and tender story about a father and son, facing loss and change.
Cave said in a statement: “Finally someone has the courage to address this unholy story. I’m thrilled that Sky and Clerkenwell Films are bringing Bunny to life, in all his flawed glory, and I can’t think of anyone better to play him than Matt Smith.”
The six-part series will begin production in spring 2024 in the south of England and will be available on Sky Atlantic and the ORA streaming service in the UK. NBCUniversal Global Distribution will handle international sales of the series on behalf of Sky Studios.
