One of the most interesting characters that will be introduced in the near future Fall the series is Walton Goggins’ called The Ghoul, who is depicted as a wildcard character in the series and a sinister bounty hunter.
The Ghoul is a “horribly scarred knight who has a code of honor, but also a ruthless streak. He is the Good, the Bad and the Ugly rolled into one. The character is a survivor who has existed for hundreds of years, and the series will offer insight into his past with flashbacks to the human he once was, a father and husband named Cooper Howard, before the nuclear holocaust turned the world into ash. and transformed him into an undead, noseless demon.”
Walton’s Ghoul is not like the Ghouls in the game. His character is a legend and is “distinguished among his kind by his intelligence and cunning”. There is still a part of his old self in the horrible form he finds himself in now.
Co-creator and director of the series Jonathan Nolan spoke about the casting of Walton and the character, saying, “Walton is equally skilled at drama and comedy, which is very difficult. There is a chasm in time and distance between who this boy was and who he has become, which for me creates a huge, dramatic question: What happened to this boy? So we’re going to walk backwards on this.”
He goes on to compare The Ghoul to the poet Virgil in Dante’s Inferno: “He becomes our guide and our protagonist in that [older] world, even if we understand him as the antagonist at the end of the world.
As for the Ghoul’s appearance, the character had to be different from the average Ghoul because he is more intelligent. They had to give us a different physique and face. Nolan also explained, “You have to be extremely careful when you put a full brace on someone’s face, because you hired that actor for a reason. Their face is their instrument. [You want] the little expressions and the changes they make.
The character’s look was created by prosthetic designer Vincent Van Dyke, and speaking about the design, Nolan shared: “I need to be able to see Walton and his performance, he has to look like a Ghoul from the game, and he has to be a a little hot.”
Nolan went on to talk about the first day they were shooting with Walton, and said, “The first day we were shooting with Walton in makeup, he comes on set and I look at him, like, ‘Walton… is that you?’ cry?’ He simply had sweat dripping from the implants under his eyes because he was so hot.
It is also explained that the Ghoul is damaged and hardened by his centuries of infinite life into a near-death state. The director said: “He’s got a lot of mileage on him, but he still has a swagger and a sort of charm to him.”
Nolan spoke about maintaining the dark aspects of the world, saying: “It’s a dark world in many ways. But the games were fun to play, fun to explore, and I think that was a mandate for us: to make sure that it was enjoyable to spend time in this universe.
The story centers on Lucy, who “has lived her entire life inside a dungeon, where every need and desire has been satisfied as generations upon generations await the day when it will be safe to emerge.”
It is explained that “When a crisis forces Lucy to venture up there on a rescue mission, she discovers that the planet above remains a hellish landscape teeming with giant insects, voracious mutant animal ‘abominations’, and a human population of tanned miscreants who follow good manners , the morals and hygiene of the gunslinger Old West resemble Downton Abbey… The games are about the culture of division and the haves and have-nots that, unfortunately, have become increasingly acute in this country and around the world in recent decades ” Nolan tells Vanity Fair for this exclusive first look.”
Lucy is described as kind, but naive. “In the Fallout universe, humans lucky enough to survive the apocalypse in underground communities only had this option available to them because they had money. Forcing doe-eyed Lucy into this sadistic, Darwinian remnant of civilization opens the door for Fallout to engage in a bit of social satire, as well as action and adventure.
