Star of the Scream franchise Neve Campbell recently spoke about how he feels about the grave death of David Arquetteit’s in Dewy V screams. This was quite a shocking moment for fans, which many were disappointed about, and joining them in their disappointment is Campbell.
During the Monster-Mania 2023 Convention, he shared his thoughts on Dewy and how he didn’t want to see the character killed off.
“I was so sad about Dewey’s death. I thought it was tragic and I usually don’t like to criticize the writing on these projects. [But] I was really disappointed in their choice to get rid of David. It’s so… I mean, Dewey is such a wonderful character and I think we were all in love with him and I think we all felt pretty sad about it. That’s obviously why they do it because it has a bigger impact, but I miss it now. I want to see him more.”
Dewy had been through all kinds of madness in this franchise and had survived a lot of physical and emotional trauma, so killing him like that was sad. I don’t think Wes Craven would have gone that route because he had more respect for the character.
Scream V directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin obviously had a different vision, previously explaining:
“I think you have to watch your heroes die to create space for new stories and to see how that affects the characters. I think as long as those deaths inform the characters in a way that’s meaningful and meaningful, then it’s worth breaking those eggs, no matter how hard they are.”
I guess it’s a way to rationalize their decision and help them sleep better at night. What did you think of Dewy’s death?
