The nightmare before Christmas is a favorite among fans of the Halloween/Christmas mashup story, and many have wondered over the years if we’d ever see a sequel. writer Tim Burton came in, celebrating the film’s thirtieth anniversary, and said no, thanks.
Speaking to Empire for a major 30th anniversary celebration, alongside director Henry Selick and co-writer Caroline Thompson, Burton vehemently stated that he wants no more Nightmare Before Christmas films of any kind.
“For me the film is very important. I’ve done sequels, I’ve done other stuff, I’ve done reboots, I’ve done all that shit, right? I don’t want this to happen. It’s nice that people are interested [in another one], but I’m not. I feel like that old man who owns a little piece of property and doesn’t want to sell it to the big power plant that wants to take my land.” Cue the grumpy voice of the old gold prospector: “Get off my land!” he barks. “You annoying little… You won’t get this property! I don’t care what you want to build on it. Come onto my property… Where’s my rifle?”
Skellington is particularly close to Burton, a “character who is perceived as dark, but is actually light,” he says, thinking back to the Pumpkin King who is enchanted by the spirit of Christmas. “That’s the kind of thing I love, whatever it is [Edward] Scissorhands or Batman, characters who have it. It represented all those feelings I had. I was perceived as a dark character, when I didn’t feel that way. So he was a very personal character.” Sometimes, a great – and perfect – adventure is just enough.
I agree with Burton. However, I wouldn’t be against seeing him make a completely new story in the same style.
