Konami recently released the best product for Yu-Gi-Oh! trading card game over the years if not ever. THE 25th Anniversary Rarities Collection has caused a lot of excitement in the world of Yu-Gi-Oh! community and rightly so. The set is a simple reprint, but Konami seems to have gone much further with this one. First, there are only 79 cards, and they’re almost all sought-after cards, including powerful staples like Lightning Storm, Forbidden Drop, and Dark Ruler No More. Secondly, each card is available in each of SEVEN rarities! This brings us to the third point in its favor: two rarities have finally been brought from the OCG to the TCG! The full list of rarities includes Super Rare, Ultra Rare, Secret Rare, Platinum Secret Rare, Quarter Century Secret Rare, Prismatic Collector’s Rare (brand new to the TCG), and Prismatic Ultimate Rare (brand new to the TCG)! I love these new rarities. They’re gorgeous in person, and I think the Prismatic Collectible Rare might be my new favorite rarity in the game. I didn’t even mention how Collection of rarities offers alternate art versions for Knightmare Unicorn and Eldlich, the Golden Lord.
THE Collection of rarities It has something for everyone and that’s why everyone loves it. Contains new rarities and alternate art for a couple of collector’s cards. Competitive players can grab the cards they need for a little less and even spend more on their decks. Likewise, reprints make it easier and cheaper for casual duelists to take their decks to the next level.
Dear Konami, please make this an annual event. I don’t care if this replaces the cans or the cans become rarities collections or maybe we keep both products separate. Please publish a collection of rarities every year. You’ll want to tweak card lists to include powerful new bases and make things different, but having a relatively small card list where every card is available in every rarity is a major win. Plus, all the shine is always an eye-catcher. Yu-Gi-Oh! duelists love glossy cardboard! Brilliant equals beautiful, right?
Below you can watch a video where I manage to open a box full of 24 packs that Konami was kind enough to send me. I’m still not convinced the camera does justice to anything brighter than a Secret Rare, but I promise the luxury rarities are stunning in person. Let me know in the comments which cards you pulled and what your favorite rarity is for Yu-Gi-Oh! cards.
