Warner Bros. has released three new clips and a featurette from their upcoming film, Wonka, which hits theaters next month, just in time for the holidays. The film presents Timothée Chalamet as Willy Wonka, known from Roald Dahl’s beloved book and the 1971 film, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. This new story tells us about the character’s background as a magician and chocolatier, long before his factory was built.
The shared scenes feature Wonka trapping an Oompa Loompa (Hugh Grant), who tries to steal his chocolate in the middle of the night. They have a conversation, which hints at the history between the two characters. There is also a scene where the young character Noodle, played by Calah Lane, visits Wonka, who creates a special chocolate especially for her. The final scene sees Wonka sharing a sweet treat with his candy-making competitors.
The featurette puts the spotlight on Chalamet’s performance as young Willy Wonka, with the director Paolo Re praising the Oscar nominee for capturing the essence of the iconic chocolatier.
I was quite skeptical about this film because the first film is so beloved and I didn’t know if this film could capture the same magic. I haven’t quite decided yet, but these clips have definitely intrigued me and captured my sense of wonder. I can’t wait to see this movie over the holidays with my family.
Wonka debuts in theaters on December 15th. Check out the clips below and let us know what you think:
