Seth MacFarlane recently shared a first look at its upcoming arrival Ted series, which will arrive on the Peacock streaming service. The image offers a new look at the raunchy talking bear and is accompanied by the following note: “An image from @framestore Melbourne, who outdid themselves with their exquisite VFX work on ‘Ted’ for @peacock. Much gratitude to our Australian friends!”
In the series, “It’s 1993 and Ted the Bear’s moment of fame has passed, leaving him to live with his best friend, 16-year-old John Bennett, who lives in a working-class Boston home with his parents and cousin. Ted may not have the best influence on John, but deep down, Ted is willing to take a risk to help his friend and family.
This is a prequel series and MacFarlane, who will return to voice Ted, has already talked about what fans can expect from the series:
“It’s going great. Look, it’s unprecedented to do a television series where your main character is completely CGI generated. I think for movies we’re so used to this, but you don’t think about the fact that this hasn’t happened.” “It’s been done up to this point for television. So it’s new. It’s doing great. It’s a prequel that’s set in 1993 and spans that era, spans the nineties and charts what is essentially the adolescence of Ted, I guess. Ted and John’s adolescence. And, growing up in a suburb of Boston. Look, having grown up in that part of the country, it’s a fun thing to try to recreate. The sets themselves are strangely nostalgic. But it’s going to great.
Tonally we are quite close to the first film. I think people who liked the first movie and appreciated that tone will be pretty happy with what we’re doing here. We’ll go with what worked. But at the same time we’re breaking new ground and building a backstory for John and Ted that we didn’t delve into in the film. But I think ‘Ted’ fans will be very happy with this show.”
When the first film featured an over-the-top style that made it a crowd-pleasing hit, making it the highest-grossing R-rated comedy ever. As for whether fans can expect the same style of comedy, MacFarlane said:
“Oh yeah. It’s like a movie. There’s no broadcast standards there. It’s an R-rated comedy. So our guidelines are the same as the movie. It’s no different. You can say ‘fuck,’ you can say whatever you want.” The challenges for something like “Ted” are more external. You’re dealing with a climate that’s maybe a little less friendly to comedy than it has been in the past. That’s certainly something we’re aware of because we want to keep Ted Ted. We want to make sure it doesn’t get altered. So, but as far as Peacock goes, no, Peacock has been great. They recognize that this was an R-rated comedy and that the show will be an R-rated comedy as well. So none of that has changed .
Ted is co-written and co-showrun by Paul Corrigan AND Brad Walsh (Modern family). MacFarlane will direct, write, co-showrun and executive produce all episodes. Other cast members include Alanna Ubach (Euphoria), Scott Grimes (American father!), Georgia Whigham (from Netflix Punisher), AND Max Burkholder (Parenting) as young John Bennet, the character originally played by Mark Wahlberg.
