Tubi partners with The Black List and will begin developing films on the Best Unproduced Screenplays list

Tubi has announced that it will partner with Black List on the “To Be Commissioned” initiative and provide emerging and established writers the opportunity to submit their screenplays to be developed, produced and distributed by Tubi.

The Black List began in 2005 and was an annual survey of the “most popular” film scripts that were not produced. It has since become a platform for writers to showcase their features, pilots and plays to industry professionals and get high-quality ratings from selected professionals.

It is reported that Tubi is “commissioning five screenplays that will appeal to a young and diverse audience and that will fit into one of the following genres: science fiction, faith, comedy, romance and wildcard (any genre) which allows the inclusion of a screenplay exceptional”. which may not fall within the other specified genres.

Writers can actually submit their work here, and the submission program runs until March 15, 2024. Writers over the age of 18 are welcome to submit their work, but all screenplays submitted must be in English. Any script hosted on the Black List and which has received at least one rating can be submitted. Writers are also invited to upload new projects for consideration in this program.

This is really cool! It’s great that Tubi brings some of these amazing stories to life and gives these writers a chance to develop their work.

Adam Lewinson, Tubi’s Chief Content Officer, said in a statement: “Tubi is dedicated to telling all the world’s stories, and that starts with the art and craft of screenwriting. We are honored to partner with Franklin Leonard and his team at The Black List, who are pioneers in nurturing writers, and together we are thrilled to uncover five diverse stories that deserve to be told.”

Franklin Leonardo, founder of the Black List, added: “The best business plan has always been a great screenplay, and we’re thrilled to help Tubi find five of them to turn into films for their large and growing audience. Tubi has done a particularly smart thing with the type of films they cater to and supported 200 writers in gaining access to the Black List site at no cost to them.

The Black List will executive produce all five films and will collaborate closely with Tubi on the entire program.

Tubi will also provide fee waivers for one evaluation and one month of hosting for 200 writers from traditionally underrepresented communities. All fee waivers will be distributed at the discretion of Tubi and the Black List.

After submissions close, a committee of Tubi content executives will meet to review all scripts and announce which ones will move forward into development. Moviegoers can expect to see these Tubi original films start hitting Tubi as early as 2025.
