TERMINATOR: THE ANIME SERIES Netflix announcement teaser

Netflix has released a teaser announcement trailer for its next project, Terminator: The Anime Series. The project was announced three years ago and is developed by Japanese animation studio Production IG (Ghost in the shell).

The series will consist of eight episodes and, although it is set in the Terminator universe, the story will revolve around new characters. The official synopsis reads:

2022: A future war has been raging for decades between the few human survivors and an endless army of machines. 1997: The artificial intelligence known as Skynet gains self-awareness and begins its war against humanity. Trapped between the future and the past, a soldier is sent back in time to change the fate of humanity. He arrives in 1997 to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee who works to launch a new artificial intelligence system designed to compete with Skynet’s impending attack on humanity. As Malcolm grapples with the moral complexities of his creation, he is hunted by a relentless assassin from the future who forever alters the fate of his three children.

Terminator: The Anime Series comes from the showrunner, executive producer and writer Mattson Tomlin (Project Power, Batman II). Skydance’s is also executive producing David Ellison, Dana Goldberg AND Don Grangerand is directed by Masashi Kudo.

Tomlin said in a previous statement: “Anyone who knows my writing knows that I believe in taking big swings and hitting the heart. I’m honored that Netflix and Skydance have given me the opportunity to approach The Terminator in a way that breaks convention, subverts expectations and has real courage.”

John Derderian, Vice President of Animated Series at Netflix, added: “Terminator is one of the most iconic science fiction stories ever created – and over time it has become increasingly relevant to our world. The new animated series will explore this universe in a way never done before. We can’t wait for fans to experience this amazing new chapter in the epic battle between machines and humans.”

Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, President and CEO of Production IG further stated: “I asked my longtime friend and colleague Mamoru Oshii what he thought of the idea of ​​turning Terminator into an animated series. His response was “Ishikawa, are you out of your mind?” At that instant I was confident that we should get on board. As huge fans, our Production IG team is putting our heart and soul into creating this series. We hope the fans enjoy it!”

I’m really curious to see how this Terminator anime series will end! I hope it tells a really interesting story!
