Lionsgate has big plans for the John Wick franchise, and it was confirmed John Wick: Chapter 5 is currently being written and there are also several spin-offs in the works. This update was released by the president of the Lionsgate film group Joe Drake during Lionsgate’s quarterly earnings call. He said:
“For Wick we got several spin-offs and the Wick Five. We started working on it right when the writers’ strike started and got back to work as soon as it ended.”
This isn’t really surprising as a franchise director Chad Stahelski he recently hinted at some of the spin-offs he’d like to see done as exploratory projects Laurence FishburneBowery King and Halle Berryby Sofia Al-Azwar We don’t know if any of these are spin-offs in development. He also recently revealed an anime series in development.
As for John Wick sequels, of course, there was always going to be another movie! I’m pretty confident we’ll see too Keanu Reeves back in the role and kicking ass.
The director had previously said that he and Reeves had ideas for John Wick films for days and that he could make these films for the rest of his career:
“I like making these films because there are no limits. We create our own mythology and have a studio that stays away from us and supports us in wacky decisions. If people go to see the movie, and it makes money, and then come back to us, Keanu and I would have ideas for days. I could live here for the rest of my career.”
He later shared that he already has ideas written down for the future of the franchise. He specifically mentioned that he has ideas for at least the next five films:
“I’ve got notebooks and shitty notebooks behind me, John Wicks 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. We’ve got ideas for days. We just don’t have the story locked down. I have no interest in taking money to bring John Wick back for anything. Is he a character I like? Obviously. And if I did a couple of John Wick movies, great. Keanu would do one again in a second if we had a good story. We leave it open. I know the studio would like us to say we have another one.
Stahelski went on to say:
“Keanu and I are always interested in this, but we leave it up in the air to see if we have anything we’d like to see. Secondly, we have a studio that is very enthusiastic and not only financially motivated, but also interested in seeing what we could do with it. So, this year they were very kind of us about branching. I know the term is “spin-offs” or “auxiliary companies” or whatever you want to call it. Keanu and I went back and all said, “Look, we have ideas for the John Wick world, other characters that aren’t John Wick-centric.” Would you guys be interested in exploring it?’ And they were great and said, “Yes, we would be very interested.” Characters that weren’t in any of the films and had fallen by the wayside because they just didn’t fit into our plots, and some existing characters that we’d like to see more of.
John Wick producer Basil Iwanyk we previously talked about the franchise and how Reeves really wanted his character to die at the end John Wick: Chapter 4. He explains that Reeves was physically and emotionally exhausted from making these films:
“After the second, third and fourth movies, making these movies is really exhausting and it destroys Keanu, physically and emotionally. At the end, he always says, ‘I can’t do this again,’ and we agree with him. The guy he’s just a shadow of his former self because he goes off and tries. He was like, ‘I want to get killed permanently at the end of this movie.'”
When Reeves talked about returning for another film, he said, “I guess I’ll have to rely on never say never.” […] To me, it’s really fitting that John Wick finds peace.”
Regardless, the study is obviously not done John Wick. Drake previously explained: “We’re not ready to say goodbye to Keanu with this franchise. It depends on what the alternative is.” He went on to add that “there are many different things we can do. I’ve seen this movie five times in the last week. I can see the way the audience moves him.”
Now they are busy expanding the world of John Wick with all these new projects. It will be interesting to see what these other spin-offs will be. But The continental is already out on Peacock and the movie Dancer it’s coming too. Other than that, I’m excited to see how John Wick the story continues in chapter 5!
