Warner Bros./Heyday Films’ Wonka was released in China on December 8, a week ahead of its domestic release and as part of an early overseas launch for the Timothée Chalamet star. Wonka goes on the same day as Universal/Enlightenment migration in China.
These are just two of a series of Hollywood films that have recently been approved for the big market. Disney/Marvel’s The wonders opens Friday, followed by Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes on November 17 and Disney’s Wish on November 24 Warner Bros./DC’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has been approved for publication but is awaiting a date.
Wonkaby Harry Potter producer David Heyman and Paddington Director Paul King sees Chalamet in the title role of the enigmatic candy maker. The original story/musical also stars Keegan-Michael Key, Rowan Atkinson, Sally Hawkins, Olivia Colman, Jim Carter and Matt Lucas. Hugh Grant plays the “something of a lunatic” Oompa-Loompa named Lofty.
Wonka scored early domestic tracking last week with box office analysis film “The Quorum,” which predicted an opening of $20 million to $23 million. It’s still pretty early in the season, so there is potential for upside. Now that the actors’ strike has been resolved, Chalamet can promote the film as a presenter SNL on the 11th of November.
The film opens overseas on December 6 with 37 markets in the first wave, including the UK, Brazil, Mexico and now China, with more foreign markets to be added the following week. The film opens in North American theaters on December 15.
As for the animation migrationHitmaker Chris Meledandri’s latest version of “Illumination” will also begin its international release before its domestic release, with a staggered release throughout December and January, with the UK joining in February and Japan in March.
About a family of ducks who leave the comfort of their pond to head south for the winter. The voice cast includes Kumail Nanjiani, Elizabeth Banks, Awkwafina and Keegan-Michael Key (who also appears in). Wonka), Danny DeVito, Caspar Jennings, Tresi Gazal, Awkwafina, Carol Kane and David Mitchell. The film is directed by Benjamin Renner and co-directed by Guylo Homsy. Renner co-wrote the screenplay The White Lotus Creator Mike White. Meledandri produces with Janet Healy.
Hollywood has seen a weak recovery in China in the post-pandemic period as the local industry has grown and audiences’ tastes have turned more inward. This year’s top studio films include: Fast X, Meg 2: The Trench (which was a Chinese co-production), Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 And Oppenheimer. Each of the sequels on this list underperformed their predecessors. There are also several local titles coming to China towards the end of the year.
Although talent is slowly returning to the market for promotional opportunities after COVID, Christopher Nolan was the first prominent filmmaker to visit Oppenheimer in August – now that the actors’ strike is over, at least a window has opened, although we hear it’s a little hard to get to the market.
