I enjoy watching bizarre and strange genre films that attempt to do something different and unique than what the mainstream Hollywood studio system keeps pumping out. This is why I love attending film festivals and watching the films they offer. I recently attended the FilmQuest Film Festival and while I was there I watched a super fun movie called The Hyperboreanwhich tells a crazy and funny story!
It’s not often you see films made as bold and genre-blending as they are The Hyperborean. A mix of family drama, mystery, humor and a hint of supernatural sci-fi fantasy. This film really takes the audience on quite a wild ride.
The Hyperborean tells the story of a whiskey magnate who summons his controversial family to taste his historic product: 170-year-old Scotch barrels, salvaged from a ghost ship in the Canadian Arctic. The story takes ridiculous and unexpected twists and just when you think you’ve got where the story is going, the narrative takes an otherworldly turn with the introduction of a laser-shooting ice mummy!
This fantastic film plays with some extremely bizarre and ambitious concepts, but more importantly, it has heart, especially when it comes to the family dynamic. The film is full of strange and colorful characters and you can tell the filmmaking team had fun developing those characters and this story.
One of the things I liked most about the film is the plot it builds and explores with the Hyperborean. I also loved how all of this was incorporated into the story. There’s a very interesting backstory that I would love to see explored more!
The film was directed by Jesse Thomas Cook (Brawl between monsters, cult hero) from a screenplay written by Tony Burgess (Pontypool) and get started Liv Collins, Ry Barrett, Jess Vano, Jonathan Craig, Justin Bott AND Tony Burgess.
The Hyperborean knows exactly what kind of movie it is and the filmmakers weren’t afraid to go to the craziest places they wanted. The movie goes overboard at times and they embrace that stuff because it’s all part of the playful style of the movie.
For those willing to take this unconventional journey, the film offers a blend as memorable and complex as the 170-year-old Scotch at its heart.
